Last Spring, I gave you a run down on the scents that fill our home from candles on a regular basis. We still have Bibliotheque sitting in our bedroom (and our bathroom… and the guest room), and the new No. 9 from Pickwick is our go-to for nightly flickering as we’re having dinner and winding down.
I’ve said before that I’m such a fan of scent in so many ways… Since we’ve moved into the new house (more on that Friday), I’ve become accustomed to the smells of exposed hardwood subfloors and- at this time of year- that slightly sticky sweet smell of downed leaves. Each day, though, before leaving the house, I want to have some sort of a for smell myself though…
I must have been bitten by the perfume bug because of my grandmother. She wore Estee Lauder’s Beautiful every day. A few years after she passed, the man and I were at a soccer game for one of his athletes and a mom was wearing the same scent. Somehow, it wafted over to me, and I nearly broke down in tears. That smell, mixed with talcum powder and hairspray was my grandmother. I had a friend approach me in a crowded bar once- they snuck up behind me as I was waiting for my drink- and said they knew it was me because they recognized my perfume. Back in those days, it was Insolence by Guerlain.
These days, though, my favorite scents are less of the “sweeter” kind, and lean on florals and spice. My current day-to day is Blanche by Byredo. With pink pepper, peony, and sandalwood, the overall feel is as clean and polished as the name suggests. Blanche. White. It reminds me of fresh bed linens right out of the dryer. The hand cream and roll-on travel with me everywhere.
I love, too, Orange Blossom from Jo Malone London. With Clementine and Lilac, it leans a tiny bit floral, but has a little bit of a spice to it.
When I’m feeling super girly- think a date night or heading to a daytime wedding, I want something that’s a heavier, more romantic floral. At those times, I pull out either Aerin Lauder’s Lilac Path or Flora by Gucci. Both are gardenia-driven, and make me feel a little more sexy and feminine. I like them in rollerball form- It’s easy to touch up my perfume when I make a powder room run when B and I are out to dinner.
No matter what I wear, though, one of my favorite perfume features is that soft cloud that envelops me at night when I lay down. It’s a subtle reminder of the day- bringing back memories and feelings that are somehow, always, connected with fragrance.
